Hosted by the International Association of Convergence (IACE), the International Seminar on “How to Activate Non-face-to-face Communication” was held online on July 14 with a panel of academics and industry experts participating.

The seminar was a venue to explore ways to promote non-face-to-face communication and present future alternatives to replace face-to-face events such as school classes, business meetings in the spread of the global Corona-19.

Starting with a welcome speech by Tony Hwang, chairman of the International Association of Convergence, and Dr. Soo-myung Woo (CEO of Asia Coach Center), Tony Hwang presented the realistic and practical issues in non-face-to-face communication, Dr. James Lim (vice-chairman of the International Association of Convergence) listed the advantages of online lectures and John Kim, adviser of International Association of Convergence (IACP International Advisor, former professor of research at Oxford University) mentioned practical and psychological issues in non-face-to-face communication.

In the presentation session on the status of non-face-to-face communication by country, Chen Han, a professor at Hunan Normal University, announced the status of China, Chris Park (Digital Business Expert) of the U.S., Helena Lee (Online Business Consultant) of the U.K. and Celso UrroZ (Digital Design Expert) of France.

On the same day, Dr. Soo-myung Woo (CEO of Asia Coach Center), vice chairman of the Women’s Venture Business Association, suggested the need for supplementary materials, referring to “the pros and cons of introducing non-face-to-face videoconferencing program technologies such as zoom and Skype in the field of human resources development consulting.

R Abanto (English Education Expert) mentioned non-face-to-face communication problems raised in online education with students from all over the world and Dr. James Lim (adjunct professor at KOREA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY) who was also a panelist, showed Korean students’ reactions to online lectures.

Si-jung Woo, an adjunct professor of counseling, cited the Law of Mehrabian and other examples of problems with existing tools in communication and Dr. Jin-hyuk Jang, an adjunct professor at Keimyung University suggested an alternative communication technique that should be supplemented in the online videoconferencing.

Dr. Chul-hee Lee (Patent Attorney) held a discussion by presenting predictions for technology development such as communication program entry status and non-face-to-face communication platform.

Lastly, Dr. Bo-mi Kim suggested the application of non-face-to-face communication technology in the hospitality industry and pointed out that there is a need for convergence research based on linguistics, communication, IT technology, psychology, and pedagogy at the association level, and many participants agreed to select it as a project in the future project.

At the end of the seminar, Tony Hwang, chairman of the International Association of Convergence, pointed out that discussions and implications on the development and utilization of non-face-to-face communication technologies have been made in the situation of Corona 19. In addition, the participants evaluated that it was a productive seminar in seeking ways to promote non-face-to-face communication and apply it to the field.
